LAKE OSWEGO HOUSE

A Traditional Ranch Gets Re-Imagined as a Modernist Masterpiece

The owners of a traditional ranch with colonial overtones wanted to remodel their home to fit their active lifestyle and modern aesthetic. The home was highly compartmentalized into generally small rooms and the flow between them was less than ideal. Also, the ceilings on the main level were only 7'-8", making the 4400 SF home feel cramped. The design process started by examining the family's routines, including two active boys and a lot of sports gear. The home was gutted, walls were removed and moved, and all surfaces were replaced. The kitchen was moved from the front to the back of the house. A large deck facilitated indoor-outdoor living and flowed into a large backyard and garden. The living room and kitchen ceilings were vaulted and walnut accents paneling was used throughout the house. The end result was a sophisticated yet friendly and expressive interpretation of the Northwest regional style.
